Wild Goose Chase: Reclaim the Adventure of Pursuing God
By Mark Batterson
see relatedthe Wild Goose Chase cont.. Cage of Routines
The following are sermon notes from a message that my Pastor gave last month(January 11,2009) the message is based on a book called Wild Goose Chase: Reclaim the Adventure of Pursuing God by: Mark Batterson. I believe this needs to be heard now more than ever. so I guess you can say that these notes are from the author, the pastor and myself I filled in the gaps between the two with help from the Holy Spirit.another good book by this author is In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day
The 1st cage that can keep us from chasing the wild goose was the cage of responsibilities the next cage that can keep you from following the Holy Spirit is Routines.
Cage of Routines
When we take constants for granted then the sacred becomes ROUTINE! Lets take a look at a life in the bible where this took place Exodus 3:1-5 (the message) the burning bush
1-2 Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the west end of the wilderness and came to the mountain of God, Horeb. The angel of God appeared to him in flames of fire blazing out of the middle of a bush. He looked. The bush was blazing away but it didn't burn up.
3 Moses said, "What's going on here? I can't believe this! Amazing! Why doesn't the bush burn up?"
4 God saw that he had stopped to look. God called to him from out of the bush, "Moses! Moses!"
He said, "Yes? I'm right here!"
5 God said, "Don't come any closer. Remove your sandals from your feet. You're standing on holy ground."
Moses did two things (1) He change his place !- Moses was use to taken care of Jethro's flocks day in and day out but this day was different he changed his place the place where he usually was and moved some where different. (2) He change his Pace! - Moses had a meeting with God Himself and after you have a true encounter with God you can not go back to the pace you were at God starts moving you into His will & His direction for your life. Just like moses when creator hits creation all you can say is here I am
ask yourself today : where has my relationship become routine? You see routines & habits are not bad things they help us set goals and accomplish the things that need to be done in our lives, but If you let routine rule your life you will never chase the goose. So I guess the next question to ask is how do i get out of routine? Prayer and fasting gets you out of the routine!! while you are praying and fasting a great thing to do is journal write down what you are asking God to show you ,to help you , or others and then write down what the holy spirits reveals to you in the word of God about your need or situation.
here's an important note to remember: (1) Hurry
KILLSyour Passion (2) HurryKILLSyour Creativity fasting and prayer help you to change your PACE!! When we take the time to really seek God through fasting and prayer we receive a Passion for the things of God and you receive Creative ideas from the Holy Spirit about your passions. We need to keep the 4th commandment. We must honor the Sabbath day because the it brings peace a peace that God will take care of everything in our lives. It does not matter if its sunday or saturday when you have your service.. as long as you set aside a day that you honor God (not that you can go along the rest of the week not honoring him or his word but there needs to be a set day that this is done)
when we learn how to do something but we forget why we do it it become ROUTINE!!
We need to lay down our comforts and be completely responsible irrespirable(see blog chasing the wild goose cage of responsibilities)
How are you stuck in a routine? what is keepig you today from chasing the Wild Goose ?
Next cage will be the Cage of Assumptions....
